S-type Load Cell for Tension Compression Load Measurement
S type load cell, or S beam load cells made from CUBTEC, as the name suggests, it is compression tension load cells. It means that both tension and pressure can be measured by an s-type load cell.
The shape of the load cell sensor is s-shaped, we usually call it an s-beam load cell sensor. The s-type load cells are one of the first invented force sensors, so it is very widely used in various industries and has very high accuracy as well.
Looking at the S-type load cell, you can find that Its force area is on the upper and lower rectangular faces, which means when applying pressure, we just need to apply the force on the two rectangular surfaces. By taking a balance weight and placing it directly on one side face of the S-type load cell sensor, we can measure the pressure force imposed on it.
When measuring tension force, the S-type load cell sensor has two threaded holes on the top and bottom, so we can fix our load pins or load shackles or other workpieces on these two threaded holes and pull them against each other to measure the tensile force. S-type load cell sensors are available in different sizes, for example, the small size can reach 19.1 × 16 mm, and the large size can reach 50 × 66 mm or more.
Because the structure and size of the load cell sensor are different, the load capacity is also different, corresponding to different use scenarios. From mini load cells to large capacity up to 10000kg, you can find the right S beam load cell to fit your specific needs. The S-type load cell is really multiple useful in various industries. This device is one of the earliest force load cells, so it is very widely used,
and the accuracy is very high the force region is on the two rectangular surfaces above and below So this pressure,
we just add the force to both ends If we put a normal code, for example,
directly on a surface like this, we can measure his pressure If you measure tension,
there are two threaded holes on the top and bottom of the Load cell We can lock our lifting rings or screws and things like that on these two threaded holes, and we can measure it by pulling
So let’s say I have these two rings in my hand, and if I attach them to a Load cell, it might be easier for you to understand When we’re done, we pull straight.
We pull straight The size of the sensor in front of me is not the same, the small size can be up to nineteen points one by sixteen mm The size of the sensor in front of me is not the same,

How Does S-Type Load Cell Works?
Tension load cells or S-type load cells are predominantly used for measuring tension or pulling force.
Moreover, many sub-types of these load cells can measure compression too, which makes them extremely versatile due to having bi-directional sensitivity.
The name of the s-type load cell resembles its ergonomic design which is based on an upper and lower arm to help align the mounting points to the central axis.
Working Principle of S-Type Load Cell
S-type is based on modern load cell technology to convert force or weight into an electrical signal. The main body of S-type load cells deforms slights when experiencing a load.
The strain gauges on the body of the s-type load cell are firmly bonded helps alter the electrical resistance to a voltage signal.
The voltage signal it generates is proportional to the initial force or weight.
Design of S-Type Load Cell
The S-type load cell is typically integrated into the supporting apparatus of particular weighing equipment and designed to suit applications that involve suspended weights.
The lower and upper limbs of the s-type load cell ensure that its mounting holes are in-line with the central axis.
The ergonomic design of these load cells makes them specialized beam load cells. Neither end is fixed in an S-type tension cell. Furthermore, its one end is connected to the apparatus below via the lower arm.
There’s a pull-up on one side of the central bar of this load cell whenever it experiences tension and an equal pull-down on the other end of the central bar. Afterward, strain gauges pick the difference across the central bar that causes the deformation.
Popular Applications of S-Type Load Cells
The primary use of S-type load cells is in mechanical-to-electronic conversions for a number of weighing and general force measurement applications.
The following are some of the extremely popular applications for S type load cells:
- Industrial control/feedback

The Advancements in the S-Type Load Cell Manufacturing
The primary objective of S-type load cells is to measure tensile forces, but also are suitable for compressive force measurement.
They’re ergonomically designed to withstand harsh ambient conditions and are mainly used in industrial applications.
S-type load cells meet the IP65 to IP68 requirements from the following protections:
- Dust ingress
- Slash water
- Splash water
- Temperature immersion
S-type load cells are chosen based on the following key parameters:
- Rated load
- Limit
- Breaking load
- Minimum scale division
The results are indicated in Newton where the load cells are to serve as force transducers.
Load cell manufacturers are able to determine its accuracy and permissible tare weight based on the above data.
At CUBLiFT, we manufacture s-type load cells that are verifiable, as most weighing systems need verifications.
Functions of S-Type Load Cells
The middle bar of the S-type load cell is the spring body of the load cell. It restores its shape once the pressure is released and deforms under pressure to record tension.
It’s also the core component of S-type load cells because it measures the weights and defines its accuracy. A strain gauge attached to the metal performs this deformation process and generates electrical signals determining the weight values.
The following are the primary parts of a standard S-type load cell:
- Mounting hole
- Strain gauges
- Upper arm
- Central beam
- Protective potting
- Lower arms

Selecting the Right S-Type Load Cell Technology
Load cell selection concerns itself primarily with the right capacity, accuracy class, and environmental protection.
Capacity:
The capacity requirements of your load cells require a fundamental understanding of the following:
- Load related terms for load cells
- Load related factors associated with the system
Furthermore, these load-related terms for your s-type load cells feature the following:
- Load cell measuring range
- Safe load limit
- Ultimate overload
- Safe sideload
A load cell performs exceptionally accurately within specifications until the safe side load limit or safe load limit is passed. At the ultimate load limit, the load cell can physically break. The following factors contribute to the weight load on the load cells:
- Dead load
- Zero tracking
- Maximum scale capacity
- Initial zero settings
- Location
In addition to these, it’s also important to derate your s-type load cells meaning use higher capacity load cells because of the following reasons:
- Off-center distribution of dead load
- Off-center loading to the scale
- Shock loading
- The possibility of an overload weight
- Dynamic influences
Accuracy:
The “% rate output” of all the s-type load cells is mentioned in their specifications.
The accuracy of a load cell sensor is determined through its %RO (Rate Output). Having an error of ± 0.5%RO of a load cell with 10,000 kg capacity means it has a resolution of ± 50kg.
Load cells are ranked according to their overall performance capabilities defined by their % rate output or resolution.
These accuracy classes can be related to standards that are used in legal for trade weighing instruments or defined by the individual load cell manufacturer.
Depending on the standard and the performance of a particular load cell type, it has given an accuracy grade.
Environmental protection:
It’s important to choose the right load cell that offers the required environmental protection and sealing standards.
It’s crucial for a load cell manufacturer to have in-depth test procedures and standards to define load cell and weighing system performance to determine its accuracy and precision.
However, there’re no standards to define the suitability of a load cell for specific environmental conditions.
However, we are able to manufacture a fully-customized load cell for your custom environment, equipment, and other needs.
