3. How does the High Lift pallet truck work?

It uses scissor action to lift pallets to a working height of 800mm, preventing back pain and strain.

They have tapered forks, and operators lift and lower the pallets with the pump handle. The forks have to be slid under the pallet, raising the load. The operator pumps the pallet truck handle, then the scissor system under each fork starts to jack up the load to a height of 31.5 inches. Afterward, it is transported to its final destination.

Because of the lifting height of 3,227mm, it has a high storage density. No vertical lifting is necessary because the worker may align the pallet with the shelf and then transport the boxes horizontally from the pallets to the shelf.

Pallets can be moved off the ground in two ways using a high lift pallet truck. One option is to use a telescoping mask, which works similarly to some forklifts and is only restricted by the mast height and counterweight.

These types can only lift to a height of about 17 meters or more. Pallet stackers are those who use a telescopic mast.

Pallet stackers are electric pallet trucks with a seating area for the operator. They manage this type of high lift pallet truck with a control panel at the waist level that has a succession of levels and buttons. It is recharged at the end of a work shift to continuously ensure it can be used the next day. At the same time, the other one is an accordion method in which intersecting legs underneath the fork extension slowly come together to lift the extension up, similar to the concept used to raise an ironing board to a reasonable level.

4. What are the benefits/advantages that a business gains from using an HLPT

  • It saves time and cost because they don’t need fuel to run, making them easier to operate. It requires less servicing than a forklift, thus saving both time and money over some time, and they offer a cost-effective solution to storage and warehouse operations.

It is also time-saving when the operators can quickly transfer the goods from one destination to another, and the quantity and weight can be vastly increased by using a simple truck.

  • Optimally designed machine for better performance-This increases productivity levels and efficient operations since they can transport various weights to various heights and the operators use them instead of handling materials directly hence lessening fatigue and saving energy.
  • Easy to maintain and operate: They are adaptable and suitable for a wide range of applications because they are available in a variety of designs, including varying lengths and diameters. A high pallet truck can also transport a load of up to 1000kgs.they are smaller in size, enabling them to maneuver around narrow corners or in tight spaces smoothly without compromising power and function.
  • It has a sturdy design to ensure long life and trouble-free operation. They have a reinforced and durable chassis for rugged and heavy lifting. They are also equipped with a built-in overload valve and maintenance-free bushings.
  • Reduced injury risk-Most of workplace injuries due to heavy lifting and handling heavy loads can be avoided. This is through the use of right-sized high lift pallet trucks because they are effortless to pull or electrically take, require minimum maintenance, and can easily be operated by anyone.
  • It offers greater visibility, allowing the operator to easily maneuver down a narrow aisle and travel safely as all obstacles can be seen.
  • They come with accessories such as small printers that are used to print out the weight of the load and integrated weighing scales where goods can be easily weighed on the High lift pallet-truck, and they can lift goods to a certain height to ease handling, the goods are stored on high shelves in a warehouse, and they assist when loading goods into a truck.
  • They can accomplish multiple tasks—they are designed to unload a pallet onto a higher shelf than floor level, and boxes can easily be moved from an elevated rack to a pallet—they can save space for larger material handling because of their hydraulic system, which has built-in safety features, can be operated manually or by battery, and is highly safe. The use of a High lift pallet-truck being positioned at a good height, carrying products from the assembly line to the store is possible. Cargo can now be placed on the pallets for delivery or stacking.

5. What is the load capacity that a high lift pallet truck can lift?

It has a total loading capacity of 1000kg and a 90-825 mm lift height, a full length of 1540mm, an entire width of 540mm, fork length of 1165mm, and fork width of 160m.

A manual high lift pallet truck’s maximum handling unit is roughly 700kg or 1500lbs on average. An electric high lift pallet truck’s average maximum handling limit is substantially higher, at roughly 2300kgs or 5000lbs.

6. What are the features/components of the High Lift Pallet Truck?

  • A hand-operated hydraulic pump raises the forks.
  • The unit has a high-pressure polyurethane seals 800-1000kg capacity
  • The piston is hard chromed and polished
  • Has a scissor action to lift pallets to a working height.
  • Three-position control levers
  • Automatically descending speed control
  • Quick lift as standard on manual models

  • Has galvanized or stainless-steel versions for operation in corrosive environments or where hygiene and cold store conditions prevail.

7. What are the disadvantages of using an HLPT?

  • Physical strain — material lifting is always dangerous, and warehouse workers are more likely to suffer industrial injuries and accidents. This may be caused by lifting heavyweight due to constant bending and stretching during loading and unloading pallets. Foot and hand crushes can also occur due to improper use; furthermore, they can be uncomfortable and time-consuming, leading to reduced morale and productivity. These injuries can lead to increased downtime, distress for the employees who suffer these injuries, and more significant worker’s compensation costs.
  • Weight limitation: A manual high lift pallet truck’s maximum handling limit is roughly 700kg or 1500lbs, however, an electric high lift pallet truck’s handling limit is substantially higher, at roughly 2300kg or 5000lbs. To improve safety, make sure you’re aware of each type of pallet truck’s precise handling limit. Overloading a pallet truck can cause it to malfunction or overbalance, creating problems for operators using the truck and any surrounding staff members.
  • More difficult to maneuver –It is advisable to pull rather than push the loads along flat surfaces. Moving from behind can be complicated, and operators may not see any obstacle or other hindrance that the fork could catch on or potential items littering the aisles. Pulling the high lift pallet truck allows the operators to check for hazards, other staff members, and travel ahead of the truck.
  • It is more expensive, especially when using electric high lift pallet trucks, because of the high maintenance cost due to their complexity, repair cost, and initial purchase price.
  • Additional training is required when using an electric pallet truck. Operators should be taught and qualified in accordance with the country’s norms and requirements. The right skills, techniques, and knowledge should be acquired to handle such difficulties while stopping the machine. It takes longer to bring a device to a complete stop while operating an electric pallet truck. This happens since they are designed to move bigger pallet stacks and hefty loads.

8. Function of high lift weight pallet?

  • It is designed to lift or raise heavy loads to a height more effortless for the operator to work with comfortably because one can adjust its heights to the user preference, reducing the need for constant bending down to load or replace heavy cargo.
  • It has a valve that controls the speed at which the truck can lower its forks to prevent injuries, and the lift function helps prevent repetitive back injuries within the workforce.
  • Its stainless-steel form makes it ideal for use in environments where hygiene and sterility are paramount, such as food and chemical industries.
  • Fixed fork stabilizers offer the truck greater stability and lock to avoid overbalancing; furthermore, angled fork tips provide easy pallet entry and safe handling.
  • It can quickly move pallets and palletized goods from one location to another, for example, from a conveyor belt to a pallet before storage or delivery, especially in a warehouse environment.
  • They turn a multiple-person job into a one-person job as it boosts the efficiency of a manual task in a warehouse environment.
  • A weight scale high lift pallet truck can weigh the cargo or whatever is being transported to a certain amount, thus providing its efficiency.
  • They load and offload conveyors, lifts, moves, and positions pallets or containers of materials.

9. What types of industries use high lift pallet trucks?

Suitable for use in most warehouses, storerooms, stockrooms, pharmaceutical companies, diaries, food such as meat and fish processing plants, printing, and chemical companies. The use of high lift pallet-truck in all these areas increases efficiency and the return on investment to the business, in the long run, rises subsequently.

10. What are the key indicators to consider when buying high lift pallet trucks?

  • The workplace atmosphere should be conducive to productivity. It’s important to consider the accessibility of the objects to be transported, as well as the size, height, and working circumstances.
  • The wheels should be made of a material that is appropriate for the environment in which they will be used, such as nylon, which has a strong grip and can take large loads on the floor without destroying it. When offloading in populous areas, it should be quieter, especially at night.
  • Polyurethane wheels are designed to suit humid, wet, or chemical industries because it resists corrosion and chemicals and they are reducing the wearing of the wheels.
  • Durability needs to be strong enough to withstand daily heavy-duty lifting and transporting without breaking or compromising its lifespan or precision.
  • The steel fork is reinforced to ensure a durable lifting capability depending on the load, and the base is made of mild steel for standard industrial use or stainless steel.
  • Operation-the buyer can choose to buy a high lift pallet truck according to how they are operated and determine how frequently they will be in use. They should go for the one with a high lift capacity to handle heavy loads and increase the efficiency of work in the workplace.
  • Weight – the buyer should compare the maximum load capacity among different high lift pallet trucks capable of handling the full weight of the goods you expect to lift.

Pallet trucks that are electric or semi-electric, for example, have a lower maximum load capacity than manual pallet trucks. By getting the correct pallet truck, you can protect your staff from injuries caused by mishandling and ensure that the pallet truck you buy will stand up to your demands and provide good value to your business.

  • Mobility-its wheels should be smooth to ensure transportation of pallets is easy and safe. The load should be distributed over several rollers, which reduces wheel wear. Buyers should go for the one with features that smoothen out movement and easy maneuvering in tight corners and narrow spots, thus saving time and money.
  • Understanding the value of what it offers and its warranty/value versus use. Ensure you buy the best high lift pallet truck that will do its required job effectively at an affordable price and one that should cover at least a year’s warranty from the date it is purchased. One can easily replace it in the event of major defects or damages.
  • Cost –business must consider a high lift pallet as a long-term investment and weigh the return on that investment and go for the more affordable one that eases and speeds up work that will provide considerable savings.
  • Choosing the right fork size that fits the warehouse’s needs is also vital.
  • Load stacking and load racking determine whether the loads can be stacked on top of each other and the shelves’ depth or height that the high lift pallet truck can be lifted to.
  • The wheel material-the floor surface condition that the high lift pallet truck should operate over will help an operator decide on what type of wheels to choose.
    • Entry wheels at the fork tips to ensure easy entry of pallets and reduce the wear to the forks.
    • Polyurethane wheels which are less noisy with a lower steering effort
    • Nylon wheels have a low steering resistance, low rolling, and protect against wear
    • Single load wheels are primarily suitable for euro pallets and have many uses
    • Solid rubber types are pretty quiet and give the best traction to floor surfaces
    • Tandem load wheels are for use in perimeter-based pallets and are best on uneven floors

11. What are the safety tips and procedures to consider when using a high lift pallet truck?

The high lift pallet truck may be used by operators who have received sufficient instruction on operating and controlling and proven their ability to handle this industry’s truck safely to the operating company’s response representative.

The operating company should ensure that the staff uses the high lift pallet truck only for its proper and intended function to do the required work as this ensures it is well maintained and serves the purpose it was made for.

The operators must read and understand the operating instructions, which are laid out, explained, demonstrated. The worker should ensure that they retain the information and apply the same in their field of work to avoid unnecessary damage or injuries.

Always inspect the high lift pallet truck before operating it and ensure it is working correctly and there are no defects, and always refer to the manufacturer operating instructions. It is sometimes a good idea to get a second party to look over the truck if you missed anything to avoid accidents.

Should familiarize himself with the self-operation of an industrial truck pallet and be aware of any possible hazard along with travel with the truck. You have to know what is around you at all times and in front of you to have crashing or tripping.

An operator must always wear appropriate protective equipment such as safety footwear, safety ear protector, industrial goggles, protection suit, safety helmet, gloves for the application conditions for the load to be lifted to decrease the chance of injury. This also protects products from damage and maintains a safe environment to work in.

Operators should not use pallet trucks that are damaged or not functional until they are correctly repaired. They should not remove disabled safety systems and report any damage or other defects to the industries truck immediately to the industrial supervisory personnel or the one in charge.

After operating the high lift pallet truck, make sure you put it away in the correct storage space. If it isn’t, make sure the forks aren’t pointing into any pathways or halls, and that they’re as close to a wall as possible to prevent trips and falls.

To keep the load balanced at all times, avoid moving large items up or down inclines or utilizing ramps. If an operator must utilize it, they should utilize forklifts that are 4-6 inches above the ground to avoid catching on the ramp or the floor.

When manually stopping, make sure you have plenty of stopping distance away from any people or other employees. When slowing down without using brakes, heavyweights generate momentum. To ensure safe stopping, newer pallet trucks must be equipped with brakes.

Always be on the lookout for objects that may obstruct your way, especially while in the movement of pallets from a truck or lofty shelves, or to ensure nothing can risk falling in the process.

Do not put your hand or foot under or into the lifting mechanism because the pallets can accidentally fall, causing harm to the operator.

No alterations or modifications should be made in this pallet truck without consent from an authorized representative or a successor. The high lift pallet truck can be used by different operators, which may cause accidents or confusion as they share the same truck.

No one should use it under the influence of drugs or alcohol or minors. Anyone under the legal age of 18years should not operate the high lift truck or anyone under the influence of alcohol and harmful substances.

12. What are the instructions to follow when handling a high lift pallet truck?

  • It should not carry cargo if the load capacity has exceeded.
  • It should not be allowed to, or fluids carry or transport harmful, unstable, poorly stacked loads.
  • It should not transport people or be used as a scooter.
  • Foodstuffs should not come into contact with the pallet trucks.
  • They should not be used in dark places or in areas that are insufficiently lit.
  • The pallet trucks should not be operated where there are risks of fire, dusty, or corrosive environment.
  • You should not allow anyone to sit, stand or pass near the high lift pallet truck when you are starting to operate.
  • The operator should walk and not run when traveling on sloppy ground. The load should be made to face down while controlling the speed by pulling backward using both hands from the handle.

13. What are the risks involved when using the high lift pallet truck?

  • When an operator does not carefully read instructions, human error ignores safety precautions or is not trained in physics principles that allow a high lift pallet truck to lift heavy loads and is not familiar with how a particular forklift operates.
  • Risk of cuts, bruises, broken bones, or feet being crushed under the load-if an operator is carrying a large, heavy item, there is a risk that it may drop, which can lead to all unfortunate accidents and cause bodily harm.
  • Some individuals have also died as a result of being crushed by the load they are transporting. They were running over the operator’s feet when walking in front of the high lift pallet truck or striking the feet of other operators near it when lowering the load.
  • Risk caused by unrepaired damages-If an operator uses a high lift truck that has defects or is unsafe due to malfunctioning or missing some parts and may not know if there is a damaged area or features, they may hurt themselves.
  • Collision with a person, cargo, or other equipment is often caused when the pallet truck has been over stacked or overloaded. The operator’s visibility is hindered, and he fails to see where he should be going.
  • Driver fatigue or overexertion may crash into cargo or people, especially manual high lift pallet trucks requiring the operator to use more energy constantly. If they are overworked, they tend to doze off during work.
  • Risk caused by an escape of consumables due to harmful leakages such as hydraulic leaks and rupture of containers can lead to hydraulic damage.
  • Accidents are due to falling or slipping, especially when driving on uneven surfaces, turning too quickly, unstable or unbalanced loads. An operator may also drop because of a lack of balance due to oil spillage.
  • Loss of stability due to the operator’s carelessness and distracted driving, and lack of placing the pallets at the high lift pallet truck center.
  • Risk is caused by insufficient testing or maintenance, which may cause technical problems or breakdowns.
  • Improper handling can hit other equipment or a parked high lift pallet truck.

14. Should one pull or push a high lift pallet truck?

Pulling the load is more effective as it allows an operator to check for hazards or other people and travel ahead of the truck.

Consequently, this increases maneuverability, and once it’s moving, you need less force to maintain it. The friction by a body is directly proportional to the normal force acting on it.

Pushing the load from behind becomes very difficult for an operator to check for hazards or any equipment that can hinder the forks from operating correctly.

16. What are the malfunctions that high lift pallet truck operators experience?

  • Malfunctions could result due to;
  • Cylinder failure – if overloaded or partial load during cargo loading can cause the form frame to fail to raise or fall means that the piston rod and cylinder are damaged. Rust can also cause cylinder failure due to long-term exposure of the piston rod.
  • We need to readjust the nut or replace the piston rod or cylinder.
  • Level failure – they may be an overload, partial load, and other circumstances that will cause the deformation or break of the lever frame due to the movements of the goods. The solution is to lift only the maximum capacity.
  • Damaged wheels can occur due to overloading or when something cuts through the moving wheels in the warehouse. There are different types of wheels such as rubber wheels, nylon, polyurethane, and so on.
  • Most of the high lift pallet truck uses nylon wheels as they are relatively cheap.
  • It can be prevented by avoiding the overloading of the pallet truck and ensuring the floor surfaces that the wheels will operate on is clean and safe.
  • Oil pump damage – the oil pump consists of many parts that are most prone to problems: steel balls, dust rings, and other accessories.
  • The easiest solution is to check and replace them once the problem or damage is discovered and eventually refill the hydraulic oil.
  • Tear and wear of moving parts due to inadequate lubrication can be prevented by applying lubricating oil to the moving parts.
  • Hydraulic system failure, which can be due to the presence of air pockets in the hydraulic fluid and debris are introduced in such that the valve is damaged and wears out.
  • It can be solved by ensuring the fluids are clean, dry, and calm, replacing the hydraulic fluid, and fitting in a new valve.

17. What are the common accidents/ injuries that can occur while using a high lift pallet truck?

Back strain -this is caused when an operator manually lifts the pallets or constantly bends down.

Internal injuries from falls-

Hand crushes.

Because of unstable empty pallets left standing on end, foot strains and fractures can cause foot injury if they tip and land on a leg.

Not putting on personal protective gears when handling high lift pallet trucks.

18. What are the causes of high lift pallet truck accidents/injuries?

  • Riding on the lift or using it as a scooter-an operator carrying a fellow staff employee in the pallet truck is unethical. This may pose a danger if they crash into another equipment or pedestrian. A high lift pallet truck should never be used as a man lift or hoist people as it is designed to carry out materials only.
  • Lack of proper education: If an operator lacks the knowledge or does not know how to operate the high lift pallet truck correctly or fails to read instructions, they may end up causing bodily harm in case of an accident.
  • Unenforced safety regulation-when a company does not have strictly laid out rules and regulations concerning how the operators should correlate, it can lead to confusion, and various accidents and injuries may occur.
  • Workplace design-leaving a loaded high lift pallet truck unattended, while it is in a raised position, is risky. A workplace should be arranged neatly and systematically to ensure there is no congestion of materials and equipment.
  • Mechanical failure-when the high lift pallet truck is not well maintained or serviced, such as lubricating it over some time and not examining working equipment, may lead to defects or damages of some parts, which can cause accidents. For example, when the brakes fail, the loaded pallets may end up falling or crashing.
  • Using damaged high lift truck pallet-if, they are defective. It can be a severe hazard, especially when lifting a high load on a high shelf. For example, when the load is raised to a waist level, the pallet cannot be moved.
  • Overloading g the high lift pallet truck and exceeding the loading limit, unstable load, and not maintaining the correct speed can cause injuries or accidents.

19. What is the prevention against accidents/injuries caused by using a high lift pallet truck?

  • Putting up rope barriers or barriers with warning signs to prevent accidents
  • Following and respecting the rules made by the company and strictly adhering to them.

20. What is the difference between a high lift pallet truck and forklifts?

A high lift pallet truck is less expensive, easy to operate, and can move loaded pallets in tight and narrow places than forklifts, which are inefficient and impractical. A high lift pallet truck is designed to be operated with minimum or fewer skills.

In addition, forklifts are capable of moving and lifting pallets and loads to high heights whereas high lift pallet trucks are made in a manner to raise loads high enough but not as high as forklifts.

Moreover, while forklifts can move large-sized loads to higher heights, high lift pallet trucks can only lift small to medium-sized loads and pallets.

21. What are the reminders to an operator when using a high lift pallet truck?

Always keep a clear view and stop or slow down once the visibility is obstructed and ensure sufficient space between an operator. Also, ensure it is clear when raising the forks, the operator should ensure that the hydraulic pump is working properly by first pressing the lever down

Additionally, check how they are operating and whether they check for hydraulic oil leakage.

Signal to fellow staff members or pedestrians when coming to a halt and signal them to stand clear. If possible, make eye contact with them to avoid unfortunate occurrences such as accidents.

Whenever you are reversing, the operator should use warning flashlights or backup alarms.

22. What is their daily inspection checklist when using a high lift pallet truck?

  • ers’ operation to ensure that everything works fine before operating it.
  • The battery should be handled correctly for safety purposes, and only qualified personnel are allowed to service or charge the batteries.
  • Check the tires to ensure they are fully functional.
  • Ensure the safety seat is equipped.
  • Inspect the hydraulic fluid level and check if there is any oil leakage from the cylinder.
  • Test the brakes, handguards and check the horn.
  • Inspect the load-handling attachment operations
  • Remove the load from the forks and lower the forks to the lowest position before maintaining it.

23. What are the qualifications/ training that an operator should have to operate on a high lift pallet truck?

Formal instructions are such that learning program which the goals and objectives are defined by the training department such as lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, videotape, and or written material (can be taken anywhere).

Here, learners are educated on how high lift pallet truck works, how to operate it, the safety precautions, instructions to follow, and how it can be safely used in all situations.

Practical training includes hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and exercises by the trainee where they are shown and taught how to handle the high lift pallet truck physically.

Evaluating the effectiveness of the training by observing the operator’s performance while doing actual work using the high lift pallet trucks. This evaluation is essential as it puts the knowledge, skills, and techniques of an operator learned practically.

Further, the supervising team can determine if they are fit and properly understand how to operate and manage it without causing unfortunate accidents and endangering anyone.

24. What are the recommended maintenance practices for high lift pallet trucks?

  • Lubricating the high lift pallet truck regularly minimizes the rate of wear and tear of the moving parts and enhance the effectiveness of the pallet truck in handling loads.
  • Using the high lift pallet truck correctly and safely and avoiding overloading may reduce its lifespan or break it down.
  • Protect your pallet truck’s wheels from damage or dirt that gets lodged between the wheels, since they will wear out much faster. This can be readily avoided by washing the wheels and removing the dirt before utilizing the high lift pallet truck on a regular basis.
  • Regularly inspect the chain for proper alignment, which is most obvious when the lowering valve no longer lowers the forks. Reattaching the chain to the lever will avoid this.
  • Check and top up or replace the hydraulic fluid on a regular basis.

This should be done in the following order:

·       Turn the pallet truck on its side with the prongs in the lowest position.

·       Place the hydraulic cylinder’s drain plug at the top.

·       Remove the screw plug from the hole.

·       Fill the filler opening with hydraulic oil until the level reaches the bottom of the filler aperture.

·       Place the gadget upright after installing the screw plug.

·       Only competent and trained employees are permitted to perform maintenance on this truck before it is used at the start of the shift and after it is returned at the end of the shift.

25. Should I buy or hire a high lift pallet truck?

Deciding whether to lease or buy a high lift pallet truck is a matter of weighing the advantages and disadvantages and determining which option is most cost-efficient and effective.

It is better to buy a high lift pallet truck because you are able to use it at your own convenience and for whatever purpose, it comes as a one-time investment and saves time as it is easy to access which means more work is completed within a short period of time. It is even worth taking a loan to invest in buying because of high returned investments.

One also recoups the money spent on buying the high lift pallet truck within months and can rent it out to other industries on short-term leases allowing it for a specific project and returning it when done.

Hiring is time-consuming as it delays the project. On most occasions, it is always more expensive than purchasing it and you are obligated to make payments for the entire lease period even if you stop using the equipment.

26. How do we avoid wear to the wheels of my high lift pallet truck?

  • It’s crucial to understand what causes premature wheel wear and how to prevent it with easy measures that will help you extend the life of your wheels.
  • To avoid flat spots and wheel damage, never leave your pallet truck parked in a loaded state. After use, the high lift pallet should be offloaded and stowed properly; keep it as clean as possible because dirt or garbage lodged between the wheels wears down the wheels over time, causing more and more damage, especially if the operator continues to use it in that condition.
  • To avoid this, make sure you check the wheels every day for waste.
  • Keeping the high lift pallet truck in an appropriate location-If you want to store the pallet truck outside or in severely cold temperatures, choose stainless steel bearings when you buy it. This will prevent the wheel bearings from rusting as quickly.
  • VU wheels should be used if an operator is transporting big items or working on rough areas.
  • If an operator does not use a high lift truck pallet frequently or on a flat surface to move a light to medium items, PU wheels or polyurethane wheels are a decent choice.
  • Wheels that are quite inexpensive and conventional.
  • To avoid cracks and bursts in the high lift pallet truck wheels, stay away from obstructions like steps.
